American anthology series created by Rod Serling and broadcast on CBS from 1959 to 1964. Each self-contained episode drops ordinary people into strange situations involving science fiction, fantasy or horror, usually ending with an unexpected twist and a moral lesson. Serling introduced the stories himself, and famous instalments include a gremlin on an aeroplane wing and a bookworm left alone with broken glasses after a nuclear war. Several revivals followed.
