Automotive engineer born in 1875 in Maffersdorf, Bohemia, who built a pioneering petrol-electric hybrid car around 1900 with motors in the wheel hubs. Technical director at Austro-Daimler and later Daimler-Benz, he developed the supercharged Mercedes SSK. In 1931 he opened a design office in Stuttgart, which created the Auto Union racing cars and the car later nicknamed the Beetle. His son Ferry launched the family sports car brand in 1948.
