Biplane built by two American bicycle makers from Dayton, Ohio, Orville and Wilbur. On 17 December 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, it made the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered heavier-than-air machine. Orville piloted the first attempt, which lasted twelve seconds and covered 120 feet. The fourth flight that day, by his brother, reached 852 feet. The original now hangs in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
