Idiom meaning to end a quarrel or conflict and make peace…

Idiom meaning to end a quarrel or conflict and make peace, setting grievances aside. It comes from a custom among Indigenous peoples of northeastern North America, notably the Haudenosaunee, whose leaders ceremonially placed weapons in the ground when concluding peace agreements. Colonists recorded the practice in the seventeenth century, and the Puritan judge Samuel Sewall mentioned it in his diary in 1680. The tomahawk thus became a symbol of reconciliation.
