Mexican painter born in 1907 in Coyoacán, in the Blue House, now her museum. Injured in a bus accident as a teenager, she began painting while confined to bed. Around a third of her works are self-portraits, rich in bright colours, monkeys, flowers and Tehuana dress, blending folk art and surrealism. In 1939 the Louvre acquired her painting The Frame, making her the first twentieth-century Mexican artist in its collection.
