Polish-born beauty entrepreneur, born in Kraków in 1872, who emigrated to Australia and opened a Melbourne salon selling a face cream based on a family recipe. She went on to establish salons in London, Paris and New York, classifying skin into types and promoting scientific skincare. Her rivalry with Elizabeth Arden became legendary. A major art collector, she was portrayed by Salvador Dalí and Graham Sutherland, and died in 1965.
