The largest living lizard, found on a handful of Indonesian islands including Rinca and parts of Flores. It can grow to about three metres long and weigh more than seventy kilograms. A patient ambush hunter, it tackles deer, pigs and even large water buffalo, and glands in its lower jaw produce venom that stops blood clotting. Females can sometimes reproduce without a male. Western scientists first described it in 1912.
