The world's largest multi-sport event, held every four years in summer and winter editions. Revived by the French baron Pierre de Coubertin, the modern competition began in Athens in 1896, inspired by ancient festivals honouring Zeus. Its flag shows five interlocking rings, and a flame lit in Greece travels by relay to the host city. London hosted in 1908, 1948 and 2012, and Los Angeles will host again in 2028.
